A Reflection on Our First Half-Term at Beacon Private School

Dinis Costa, Head of School

By Dinis Costa, Head of School As we come to the end of this half-term at Beacon Private School, it is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the many achievements and milestones we have reached as a strong and unified school community. The incredible collaboration between students, staff, and parents is a reflection of the deep sense of belonging we have fostered over the years, making the Beacon school community a truly unique and supportive environment. This connection is central to our philosophy of creating a positive, inclusive space for every learner. Strengthening the School Community At the core of Beacon Private School is the belief that every individual—whether they are students, teachers, or parents—has a valuable role in shaping the future of our school community. The Beacon school community is not just a collection of individuals working towards their own goals; it is a dynamic network of people committed to helping one another succeed. This spirit of collaboration has been evident in every aspect of school life, from daily interactions to large-scale school events. We believe that fostering a strong school community begins with open communication and mutual respect. This year, we have placed greater emphasis on the importance of dialogue between students, staff, and parents. Through regular meetings, feedback sessions, and events, we have ensured that everyone in the Beacon school community has a voice and feels heard. Celebrating Peace Day and Pink Day This half-term, our school community came together to celebrate two important events—Peace Day and Pink Day. These occasions provided an opportunity for our Beacon school community to unite around causes that go beyond the classroom. Peace Day allowed us to reflect on the importance of global peace and encouraged our students to think critically about their role in promoting harmony and understanding in the world. Our Pink Day, held to raise awareness about breast cancer, saw overwhelming participation from the entire school community. The support and dedication shown by students, staff, and parents were inspiring and further solidified the sense of unity that defines the Beacon school community. These events are not just about raising awareness; they are about empowering our students to become proactive members of society. We believe that by encouraging our learners to engage with important global and local issues, we are helping them develop into responsible and compassionate citizens. Expanding After-School Programs One of the highlights of this half-term has been the expansion of our after-school activities program. This initiative has seen tremendous growth, with double the number of offerings compared to previous years. The Beacon school community has embraced this expansion with enthusiasm, and students now have more opportunities than ever to explore their passions and develop new skills. From sports and arts to academic enrichment programs, these activities are designed to enhance the learning experience and foster a deeper sense of belonging within the school community. Our after-school programs are not just about extracurricular activities—they are an extension of our commitment to holistic education. By offering a wide range of activities, we ensure that every student can find something that excites and challenges them. This is yet another way we strengthen our school community by encouraging students to support one another in pursuing their interests and talents. Academic Excellence and New Offerings Academically, Beacon Private School has continued to innovate and grow. This year, we have introduced new subjects to our curriculum, including Design and Physics in the Diploma Programme. These additions have been met with excitement from students and staff alike and have broadened the academic pathways available within our school community. These new subjects are part of our commitment to offering a comprehensive education that prepares our students for the challenges and opportunities of the future. As a candidate school for both the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP), we have embraced more rigorous assessment procedures that encourage students to take ownership of their learning. This shift has been an important step in ensuring that our school community is one that fosters critical thinking, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning. By focusing on the development of essential skills, we are helping our students become better learners and more engaged members of the Beacon school community. The Growth of Our Early Childhood Program One of the most significant achievements of this half-term has been the remarkable growth of our Early Childhood program. Enrollment in this section has increased by over 100%, a testament to the success of our bilingual education model. Our Beacon school community includes a diverse group of learners, and we are proud to offer a program that allows both Arabic and English speakers to thrive. In the Early Childhood program, Arabic learners have made great strides in developing their English language skills, while expat students have successfully learned Arabic, fostering greater cultural understanding and collaboration within our school community. This bilingual approach is a reflection of our commitment to creating a global school community where every learner can succeed and contribute. Enhancing Well-Being in the Beacon School Community Well-being has always been a priority at Beacon Private School, and this year we have continued to make great strides in supporting the mental, emotional, and social health of our students. Our well-being program has become a cornerstone of the Beacon school, helping students understand the importance of self-care and respect for others. Throughout October, we focused on promoting kindness and raising awareness about bullying. These initiatives were well-received by students and have reinforced our commitment to creating a safe and inclusive school community. By encouraging empathy and respect, we are helping to build a stronger, more unified school community where every student feels valued and supported. Looking Ahead: Building a Stronger School Community As we move forward into the next half-term, I am confident that the Beacon school community will continue to thrive. Our collective achievements this year have been remarkable, but there is still much more to accomplish. We are committed to providing every student with the tools they
